THE CHURCH IN MISSION. . .
The Habitat for Humanity 2010 Presbyterian Build is coming to a neighborhood near you soon! At this time, the build will begin in early February and seven local Presbyterian churches are planning to participate. The build site will be located on Pennlyn Drive again this year. Please plan on joining us for hard work, good food and great fellowship during the 2010 Presbyterian Build.

CHURCH SCHOOL CORNER
As we start a new year and a new decade, our prayer is that you will join us Sunday morning for Bible study. Please come and be a part of what is happening in our Sunday Bible Study classes during the month of January 2010.

For the Pre-K through Middle School – We are studying the Book of Genesis including the creation story and the scriptures about Adam and Eve. We are continuing to use the rotation model for this study. This uses various learning / teaching techniques to study Genesis. Some things a student will learn include:

Locating the book of Genesis and identify it as the first book in the Old Testament;
Learning about the concept of honesty and why it is important.
Relating the fact that God did not create the world and leave us, but wants a relationship with us.
Retelling the story of the creation of the earth, the creatures, and man
Exploring the fact that everything we see was created by God.

In the High School Class we are using the Claim the Life “PROMISE” Curriculum. Topics will include Testing what we hear from the world around us against what we learn from the Bible, and “Dancing”, to learn how we can worship God.

For our Adult I, Reverend Peacock will continue his class and the Adult II class will begin a new study entitled The Evidences of Jesus as the Messiah from the book of Matthew.

Please come and learn with us.

DID YOU KNOW
By Phil Ferguson
The Sadducees were one of the three major religious sects of Judaism and were active until the fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. They were an aristocratic sect that had little to do with the common people. They were composed mainly of high priests, priests and wealthy and powerful people. Most priests, but not all, were Sadducees.

The Sadducees believed only the written law (the Torah) and did not recognize the Oral Law. Many of their beliefs were directly opposed to those of the Pharisees. Among their beliefs was free will, that man was master of his own destiny. They also rejected the ideas of immortality of the soul and the resurrection of the dead.

A Nursery For Child-Care During Sunday School and Worship
Remember that we have a “Nursery” for child-care during both Sunday School and Worship hours. The Nursery is located in the Christian Education Center. Our friendly, experienced and capable nursery attendants are Diane Papka and Elaine Petford.
This Child-Care is provided for children from Birth to age 5.

Children older than 5 are welcome to be with the congregation in worship, and parents are encouraged to help their child to explore and understand the variety of actions that make up worship here at Lafayette Church. Is there interest and support for a “Children’s Church”?

Christian Education
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION has no requirements of age, sex, race, Church membership, school education, good looks (or otherwise), or any other possible need except a desire to keep learning about God, Jesus Christ, the Bible and what Christian faith is all about. We never outgrow the need for more understanding of our foundations of faith and how to live it, and how to share it with our families, co-workers, or neighbors. Lafayette Presbyterian has a class for Y O U.  For more information click here.

Stephen Ministry Training
Stephen Ministry Training begins on Monday, May 11th. God has blessed us with 15 women and men of Lafayette Church ready to undertake the 50 hours of preparation in order to be a help to others, as any have need. Pray that our Stephen Ministry program will move on from strength to strength in the grace of God.  For more information click here.
