Advent
ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS AT LAFAYETTE ...........
The Christian season of Advent ...
... begins on Sunday, November 30th. On that Sunday, we will celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion.
The Season of Advent starts four Sundays before Christmas. It is a time of expectation and of preparing for the coming of Christ. The word “advent” means “coming.” This Christian season dates from about the sixth century, and was developed to provide a time of self-examination and spiritual preparation for the celebration of Christ’s birth, and of Christ’s coming anew into our lives, into our world.
The Advent Wreath of four candles is a helpful symbol of anticipation, a candle lit each week as a measure of our progress to the coming of the Light of the World. The candles and the paraments over the Lord’s Table and pulpit are purple, a royal color signifying the coming King.
